It has been named after the famous Croatian historian and priest, Ivan Krstitelj Tkalčić (John the Baptist Tkalčić) whose numerous literal and visual contributions to the city of Zagreb and archdiocese of Zagreb have revived the historical images of important cultural sites.
Tkalčićeva street has been one of the first industrial blocks in Zagreb and a production mecca for basic necessities of that time like cloth, soap, paper, liqueurs and leather. That industrial feel was lost in 1890. with the publishing of the first urban planning decree of Milan Lenuci which designated that area to become residential only.
From then on, the street has been known as one of the most beautiful residential areas of Zagreb, and its inhabitants painted the tone and the character of the entire city.
